My Chosen Track

Underground Heros- Skinny Twins

Underground Heros are a well known band local band who are good mates with The Vinly Junkies who are a locally known band also. I chosen the track Skinny Twins as it is a real up-beat song which is really catchy and a happy song. The song is ironic in it'self as the lyrics mimic Indie young people, which is ironic that the artists themself are indie, i like the fact they have humour and talented enough to make good use of it.
The song has lots of intertextual refernces which  i have alot of idears which i want to put together. They are known as an indie/rock band which is the music i listen to, and is my chosen genre for this task.

CD COVERS

Niche Markets

Branding

Branding can be seen by a lot of bands and artists and is a great way to promote the artist. This is because it can be seen on a lot of merchandise and products that they sell. Branding is used the same way as a designer, which means putting the logo or name on items to increase sales. Some of these items could include badges, t-shirts, posters, stickers and pens.
There are various shops around the UK and located in other countries which sell official band merchandise which is branded. There are always types of unofficial band merchandise sold in some places, these have tried to be branded identical, but because this would be illegal there is always a difference even if it isn't that obvious at first glance. As every artist brands and no body could copy there branding as it would be illegal.
Most new-ish bands don't have logos of pictures, they are usually their band name but in their own font which they use on all their merchandise and websites. For example The Killers  logo is just their name which is used on their website, album covers, merchandise and posters/adverts to promote their gigs

'The Killers' have a simple, yet memorable and easy to associate design as their branding marketing tool. Products that have this design on them can be mainly sold on the promoters website store if they have one. The whole reason for branding is mainly promotional, but it can mean something to the customer that it is a sign of support for the artist. This can be very powerful as people will soon learn to associate the logo with the artist.

Pink Floyd’s an example of  using a clever and sucessful logo which has been used for their album cover ‘Dark Side of The Moon’, which is very effective. It is a white triangle on a black back ground, the left side of the triangle is white streak of light then coming out of the right side of triangle is a raibow strip.

The online revolution

The online marketplace and revolution of this has had an astounding effect on the music industry and how bands and artists promote their material. This has changed greatly with more traditional forms of promotion. This is because the internet is more accessible than ever which can take you to sites such as Spotify or streaming sites like Youtube. This means more and more people are gaining access to free music (usually illegally) and they are able to download from them. This is costing the music industry massive amounts.

There are a variety of ways to promote using the online tactic; and this is seen as a very modern for some artists, and even some of the audience. Youtube is becoming one of the most successful ways to reach your music out to fans for free, with it instantly streaming, which you could listen to anytime and how ever many times you wish. Spotify is also another way to listen to music an unlimited amount of times, but it is also fighting to keep some of the revenues for the artists, charging the user £9.99 a month for unlimited usage. This is also a good way for artists to promote their music, as artist still get money for for people listening to their music. Myspace, Facebook and Twitter are well known social networking sites, used by many people and are very successful ways to promote to the younger generations,as they tend to be on the computer or their phone most hours of the day.

The Arctic Monkeys have created a huge fan base due to Myspace, the social networking site has made The Arctic Monkeys who they are today which has led them to playing at Glastonbury, Reading and Vfestival.
How has the internet changed the promotion of music?
The internet has made its extremely easy for anybody independent to build up an audience by uploading their music to a site. The internet is the new way of promoting virtually all music, it is the most successful way to be seen or spotted by a record label. It allows the audience for an artist to be instantly connected with them,by sites suchas Twitter,Facebook and Myspace. The social networking sites, make the audiences feel like they are part of the artists lives. The arctic Monkeys  represented the possibility of a change in the way in which new bands are promoted and marketed. They started out playing at local pubs and handing out Demo's on CD which then  lead to them  to creating a huge fan base.
The Kooks foremed in 2001 and within 3 months of them being togethr they singed with virgin records, unlike the arctic monkeys they signed with a record company after  a year of being independant and making it themselves wheras the Kooks had a manager to keep them organised.

In conclusion, there are many different ways to promote your music if you are an artist, and the most recent one being the 'online revolution'. There was a time where the radio would have been the revolution for promoting, and posters too. It's just the online revolution has more critics because it is a more evolved and interactive way of promoting. A new up-coming artist which wants to make it big the main thing would be is to start through social networking sites and not through what artists used to use which would be the radio.

Target Audience

My chosen artist is Underground Heros and here are three bands that link to them to the genre of music i have chosen

. The Kooks
They are an english indie band formed in Brighton, who are signed with Virgin records. They used social networking sites to promote there music, and also they had a lot of airplay. As there fan base grew they were able to promote there music through popular media such as television adverts, talk shows and radio interviews. The kooks also played at alot of festivals to reach out to his audience and to get there new songs listened to aswell. In 2006 the band won an award for the best UK and Ireland act at the MTV Europe music awards and in 2008 debuting a number one with the sog ‘Konk’.

.The Arctic Monkeys
They are an indie/rock band formed in 2002 in shefield. In 2003 the band started to give away free CD’s at there giggs to get a larger fan base this is a traditonal method to promote there music. They had a myspace which was originally created by their fans.  The Arctic Monkeys grew in popularity across England and from this they recieved attention from BBC radio and British tabloid press. A local  amateur photographer filmed the bands performance at a gig  and made the music video to ‘ Fake Tales of San Francisco’.Eventually in 2005 Domino records singed the band and they have  had instant sucess since.

. Libertines
They are an English rock band formed in London in 1997.Pete Doherty(gutirist/backing vocals) and Carl Barat( lead singer) met whilst University and formed a bond over their shared passion for song writing. Many  of their early gigs took place in their flat they shared, the band evtually got singed by Warner Chappel which took in an active role in managing them. This succeeded in spreadint there name around the music press.

Goodwin's Theory- Intertextuality

The music video of Madonna Material Girl it is a  remake of Marilyn Monroe, Diamonds are a girls best friend, from the film 'Gentlemen Prefers Blondes.'
This is an example of Intertextuality, Intertextuality is when a music video includes scenes, or styles from a film, video game, or fashion and photography.
David Fincher, started off as directors of music video's before directing films, which is the director of the music video madonna's song Material Girl.Fincher has used the use of super models  in George Michael's video to portray  intertextuality. This is intertextuality as people are familar of super models in their every day lives through, magazinge, newspapers, and on Television
Robert Palmer in the 80's ,released the song addicted to love,  which  was an exaple of Fashion Notice. In
Sahania Twains music video 'Man I Feel Like AWomen', they have replaced the women with men and the formation in which they are all placed  in are the same. This is used because people who knew Robert Plamer, and who liked him, probale know the music video so when Shania Twain bought out her single and had a similar music video people would be reminded ot Robert Plamer and would most probably enjoy it.
